The area is black gumbo dirt with a light covering of trimmed wild grass. The 13.5 amp rototiller had plenty of power to break the ground, chew up the grass roots, and then churn in the seeds. I couldn't be more pleased. This does an excellent job for the raised bed gardens I have, for reworking the soil and adding supplements. Lightweight and easy to move around.

If you need to till hard soil I would get a gasoline tiller for the needed power and weight. But this is perfect for raised beds!

Our garden isn't very large and in the past, did fall and spring prep work by hand with various garden hand tools. No more back breaking work for me! It was very easy to use and had the job done in no time flat. Worked perfectly in this Florida soil. This tiller worked much better than anticipated.

Packed hard clay soil was no match for this tiller... Packed hard clay soil was no match for this tiller. Area that needed work was about 300 sq ft. Turned over 8 inches of soil in about 4 hrs using two passes, 90 deg. Powerful motor did not stall or slow down.

Let the tiller drive, most of the effort is to keep it straight. Once you lean how to use the different levels and get used to the various depths and speeds worked fine for what I did. Probably pushing the 14 GA extension wire loop through the handle to lock on to the hook not a good idea as it puts a kink into it due to it's thickness. Also, you have to be careful of the trailing cord to keep it out of the way. More powerful than you would think.

Only bogged down a bit on thick roots and on the couple of big rocks I discovered (and had to dig out with a shovel). Since we did it on lawn, a lot of the'creeper' grass wound around the shaft, but we just unwound it every couple of minutes unplug it first! I tried 2 different concrete blocks to weigh it down more (wrapped in cardboard, so as not to scratch the tiller handles).... 16' x 16' x 1.75' = 37 lbs.... And 12' x 12' x 1.75' = 17 lbs. It helped the'jumping around' a good bit (obviously the heavier block held it down more), but after the first shallow pass, I took the weights off, and it worked just fine as is (bouncier though when you hit roots). It unearthed a few big rocks, one of which was jammed in to where I had to use a heavy hammer and metal spike to bang it out.... Then bend one tine back about 3/4' even if one were to break off, I believe there are 24... The second pass over the area, with tines at lowest setting, pulled up more rocks and hit more roots.... I had to bang 3 more tines back into position after this, but it was no big deal.

This little guy chewed up everything. The hardest part is done... Now just touching up, or tilling in fertilizer before planting.

This thing is lightweight (17 lbs), fairly easy to handle and move around, powerful..... And I can see this lasting for many years to keep the little garden in shape. Just plug it in and go. After easy assembly, I put this to work tilling my weedy and somewhat rocky former garden. Except for having to stop and clear out a few stones from the tines the powerful motor did an admirable job of breaking up the hard ground.

Lots of power seems to work really well. I haven't had a chance to give it a good work out yet, but I did do some work with it in the flower bed, I'm impressed lots of power and light enough to be lifted into raised beds, time will tell. First off I have removed several square yards of carpet grass to which the only problem is having to stop frequently and remove the roots which rapidly wind around the tines(a natural inconvenience) and secondly the big test, grinding into my hard black clay soil.

I must admit, this little tiller just chews it up! Bought this Sun Joe 13.5 Amp electric tiller in order to till my dead lawn in preparation for re-seeding. The tiller was able to easily work though the dead grass and thatch. Best method was to pull it while walking backwards to prevent bouncing. Also was able to put a 15Kg bag of lime on top and till in the forward direction with minimal bouncing while breaking through the dead grass layer.

Tilled over 2000 sq ft over 2 days. The only issue is that the opening and slot for the power cord is too small for a high quality outdoor 12-gauge power cord to fit. So I had to loop the power cord around the handle to avoid putting stress on the unit's cord.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a garden tiller. Plenty of power to till through clay hardpan that has not been disturbed in 50 years. The unit is very light, so it is easy to carry my back likes this! Of course, the light weight causes the tiller to bounce around a lot on the first pass through hardpan soil. Solution is to pull the tiller backwards through hardpan.

Once the hardpan has been broken up, the tiller readily breaks up the smaller chunks. This item is everything as was described. It is a great machine and does wonders in the garden. I can recommend this to anyone. It's a hoss for dirt.

Having a Mantis 2 cycle gas tiller for our west coast home, I thought an electric unit would be more environmentally friendly and less intrusive on the neighbors.

I used this to break up dirt that had been compacted down by over 50,000lbs of above ground pool. It had NO problem doing this. As we get older we need to look at equipment that is easy to handle but still gets the job done. I have put this cultivator to some very stringent tests and it has met my expectations. I bought this tiller to, initially, till up about 1/4 acre of lawn to lay new sod. I bought an electric tiller because I didn't want the hassles of a small gas engine that is hard to start as the years go by. I was concerned I would be trading performance for convenience. I tilled down 2 or 3 inches quickly without the machine getting bogged down (which is just enough to get the grass up and prep the soil for new sod). The tines are good quality. It folds up compactly and is light weight enough to put up on a shelf.
